What You Should Know About Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are one of the most common restorative treatments in dentistry — and for good reason. Whether you’ve cracked a tooth, had a large cavity filled, or recently completed a root canal, a crown can help protect and restore your smile. But what exactly is a crown, and when is it needed? Here’s a simple breakdown.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. It’s typically used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but still healthy enough to avoid extraction. Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of materials.

When Do You Need a Crown?

Your dentist may recommend a crown if you have:

  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A large cavity that can’t be treated with a filling alone
  • A tooth that’s been weakened by decay or trauma
  • A worn-down tooth from grinding or erosion
  • A tooth that’s had a root canal
  • A dental implant or bridge that needs coverage

How the Procedure Works

Getting a crown usually takes two visits:

  1. First visit: The tooth is prepared by removing any damaged areas and shaping it to hold the crown. An impression is taken and sent to a lab, and a temporary crown is placed.
  2. Second visit: Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary is removed and the new crown is cemented in place for a secure, natural-looking fit.

Do Crowns Last Forever?

With proper care, most crowns last 10–15 years or more. Good oral hygiene, avoiding very hard foods, and regular dental checkups all help extend the life of your crown. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may also be recommended to prevent damage.

Do They Look Natural?

Yes. Modern crowns — especially those made of porcelain or ceramic — are designed to match the color and contour of your natural teeth. Once placed, most people can’t even tell which tooth has the crown.
