Dental Implants vs. Dental Bridges: How Do You Choose?

If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant and a dental bridge are two possible ways to fill the gap. Both can restore the appearance of your smile and help you chew. The right choice depends on your oral health, the teeth next to the gap, and your treatment goals.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a post placed in the jawbone to support a replacement tooth. For a single missing tooth, a custom crown is attached after the implant has had time to heal.

Because a single-tooth implant is supported by the jawbone, it generally does not require the neighboring teeth to support the replacement crown.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A traditional dental bridge uses an artificial tooth to fill the gap. Crowns on the teeth beside the gap hold that replacement tooth in place. Bridges can also be supported by implants in some cases.

For a traditional bridge, the supporting teeth usually need to be prepared for crowns. Your dentist will examine those teeth to determine whether this is a suitable option.

How Does Treatment Differ?

Implant treatment involves placing the post and allowing it to integrate with the jawbone before the final restoration is attached. Depending on your needs, additional treatment such as bone grafting may be recommended.

A traditional bridge does not require implant placement. Your dentist will prepare the supporting teeth, take the measurements needed for the bridge, and check its fit before it is secured in place. The number of visits and overall timeline vary by patient.

How Do You Care for Each Option?

Both options need daily brushing, cleaning around the restoration, and regular dental visits. With an implant, it is especially important to keep the surrounding gums healthy. With a bridge, your dentist can show you how to clean beneath the artificial tooth and around the supporting teeth.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Your dentist will consider the health of your gums and neighboring teeth, the amount of available bone, your medical history, and your preferences. An examination can help you understand the benefits and limitations of each option for your specific situation.
